High blood pressure (hypertension) caused the deaths of 42,565 Americans in 1997, and was a contributing factor in over 200,000 others. The fact is that 1 in 4 adult Americans have high blood pressure, although 31.6% of them don't know they have hypertension. These statistics are truly alarming when you consider that high blood pressure is easy to diagnose and treat -- it's one of the most preventable causes of death in the U.S. today.
High blood pressure means that your heart is working harder than normal to force blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. In most adults, a blood pressure reading greater than 140 over 90 is considered high.
When blood pressure is elevated for an extended period of time, the inner linings of the coronary arteries become damaged. This leaves them susceptible to the buildup of fatty deposits that can narrow or block the arteries and reduce blood flow to the body's organs. When untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart failure, stroke, kidney damage, and loss of vision from damage to the retina at the back of the eye.
Your risk for high blood pressure increases as you age and if you have a family history of heart disease. Other risk factors include: exessive mental stress, smoking, being overweight, taking birth control pills, or using excessive amounts of salt.
SYMPTOMS: If they occur, can consist of headaches, chest pain, nosebleeds, and shortness of breath. On rare occasions, people may have a stroke as the first symptom of high blood pressure.
